Growing violence in the northern communes of the city of Bujumbura continues to take its toll on the civilian population. In the quarter of Ngozi in Kinama commune a gang killed a nurse on night Sunday. This killing has shocked the inhabitants of Kinama who wonder why the President of the Republic, who claims to be a devout Christian, has remained silent over the escalating violence in their commune.
Violence is also gathering momentum in Kamenge commune where unidentified persons killed the chief of Teza quarter on Friday. The chief of Teza quarter was persuading the population to participate in the community works program. The motive behind this killing is still unknown. The chief of Teza quarter had survived survived an attack targeting an agent of the national intelligence services known as â-šDix Tonnes" who is now under intensive care.
Kamenge and Kinama communes are becoming a battlefield for the Youth wing of PALIPEHUTU-FNL known as J.P.H. and demobilised combatants who frequently serve as informants for the National Intelligence Services. Many believe that the cause of the numerous selective killings that have taken place in this are is the conflict between these two groups.
The government of Burundi has remained silent over the growing violence in the past three weeks. After a two-week holiday which the Head of State and the First Lady spent upcountry planting avocado trees, President Nkurunziza has gone to Makamba again. He met today with governors of provinces, regional police and military commanders. The issue of security was first on the agenda.
