Nigeria: Country Assists Sao Tome And Principe With $1m

Abuja — Sao Tome and Principe has received a major financial boost from Nigeria to reinforce its defence and security system, as well as carry out some social projects in the Archipelago Islands.

The financial aid, which was in the tune of nearly $1 million, was delivered to the country's minister of economy, Valdemira Tavares, last Friday by the Nigerian head of diplomacy, Bagudu Hirse.

Nigeria, which also assisted the country with various tons of food stuffs to alleviate its national market laxity, provided it with more than $100,000 to help it in the execution of some of its social problems, including the channeling of portable water to the community of Picao in the Island of Principe, as well as the construction of health centre in the Island of Sao Tome.

Another sum of more than $900,000 was received from Nigeria by Sao Tome and Principe to assist them strengthen their defence and security system.

The gesture is seen as suitable for the strengthening of the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the Archipelago Islands, especially since the duo share the exploration of petroleum on an expanse of common maritime zone.

Reacting to the gesture, Tavares said, "I will do everything within the possibilities of the government in improving food security, encouraging the growth of local production, as well as their availability at the national level."
