Bujumbura — Rema hospital opened today. The founder of Maison Shalom, Ms Marguerite Barankitse, also known as Maggy, financed the construction through donations and credit at a cost of about four billion francs. This hospital is primary intended to help mothers but it has psychiatric wing as well. The second Vice-President of the Republic and other high profile authorities attended the opening ceremonies.
The hospital is two kilometres from the centre of Ruyigi, an area of uncertain security after the killing French worker Agnès Bury. Ms Barankitse downplayed security concerns yesterday and said that it is the sole responsibility of the government to maintain safety.
Two female Burundian personalities have constructed hospitals with charitable aims during this period of instability. Sister Daphrosa, a cardiologist and a nun, constructed a hospital in Mivo in Ngozi province and Ms Barankitse opened Rema hospital.
