Nigeria: Media Tasked on Maternal Child Health Issues

Lagos — PARTICIPANTS at a one-day forum on Maternal and child mortality have appealed to Nigerian media to be more proactive in their reporting of maternal, newborn and child health issues.

So as to help the country achieve the millienium Development Goals 4 and 5 by the year 2015.

They also observed that Media practitioners have a role to play in educating the populace on different low-cost interventions such as immunisations, Oral dehyddration therapy and the use of skilled birth attendants which would help in preventing the deaths of pregnant women, newborns and children under the age of 5 years that are mainly preventable.

Through the reports of the media practitioners, the participants policy makers and service providers would become aware of the needs of the communities, their area of susceptibility to deaths and even learn of best practises in other developing nations and some states in NIgeria.

The forum was packaged by the Development Communications Network, Lagos and had in attendance Dr. Leke Pitan, Former Lagos State Commissioner for Health and Education, Dr. Mariam Jagun, Reproductive Health Programme Coordinator of COMPASS, Dr. Mrs. Tawaqualit Ottun of Ayinke House, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Dr. Kunle Kusemiju, Senior Registrar at the Island Maternity Lagos.
