Mozambique: Luisa Diogo to Address Global Development Conference

24 January 2008

Maputo — Mozambican Prime Minister Luisa Diogo will be one of the key participants at next week's Global Development Annual Conference, to be held in the Australian city of Brisbane.

The Conference, organised by the Global Development Network, on the theme "Security for Development: Confronting Threats to Survival and Safety" takes place from 29-31 January. Some five hundred researchers and policy makers from developing countries and world renowned experts are expected to tackle some of the most troubling and controversial questions on global poverty and security.

Diogo is scheduled to chair the final session where policy makers will discuss the feasibility of various options for improving security.

According to the organisers, the conference will look at whether poverty is one of the main causes of civil wars and violence, and also whether economic development in some of the poorer countries will contribute to climate change. The conference will also address the question of who is responsible for stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS - whether it is individuals or the state - and what incentives can be used to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

Other participants include the Director of Columbia University's Earth Institute, Jeffrey Sachs, the Managing Director of the World Bank, Graeme Wheeler, and the Nobel Economics Laureate, Michael Spence.

The Global Development Network describes itself as "a worldwide network of research and policy institutes working to provide a fresh and relevant perspective to the development challenges of our time". It argues that "policy-relevant research, if properly applied, can accelerate the pace of global development".
