Bujumbura — Burundi's Consumers Association (ABUCO) plans to lodge a charge against the beer brewing company BRARUDI.
ABUCO announces that the recent rise in the price of Brarudi was illegal. A cabinet meeting gave this company permission to increase the price of lemonade by only 50 francs. Brarudi, however, took the opportunity to charge more for alcoholic drink and raised the price of lemonade by 100 francs.
Shortly afterwards these price increases, ABUCO called on the people of Burundi to boycott Brarudi products, to no affect.
The minister for industry, Mrs Euphrasie Bigirimana, has a moderate view. She recently acknowledged that Brarudi did not consult her ministry prior to increasing the prices of its products. She also supports Brarudi's opinion that the price of raw material and oil has risen on the international market.
The price of beer in Burundi remains the lowest amongst other countries in the East-African community. The prices of foodstuffs continue to skyrocket.
