Burundi: Student Killed in Kabezi Commune

28 January 2008

Bujumbura — Unknown persons killed a student and wounded his sister with machetes in Mubone of Kabezi commune during the night of 24 January 2008. The attackers failed in their attempt to catch the victim's parents who fled.

The measures that the security minister, Police Commissioner Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni devised to rid the country of the growing violence have proved insufficient. The organisation for the monitoring of governmental action, O.A.G., also finds that the measures are not sufficient to combat the trend violence risen to an unprecedented level over the past weeks. In a statement issued today, Onesphore Nduwayo, the chairman of the OAG, advises the government to take greater paint to protect the people of Burundi. He also adds that the government should pay greater attention to the social crisis that continues to shake the province of Ruyigi after the killing of French aid worker, Agnès Bury.

The national police have proved unable to control the spread of violence since CNDD-FDD came to power. Yesterday in Kinama commune in the northern outskirts of Bujumbura city, the police carried out a search in three quarters led to the capture of only Congolese and Rwandan living there illegally. Kinama has been unstable ever since former CNDD-FDD combatants were rearmed. These combatants, who are now working as informants for the national intelligence services, are still in conflict with the youth wing of PALIPEHUTU-FNL.
