Kampala — THE army in Arua has arrested two men from Kampala who allegedly tried to drive a stolen car into the DR Congo. Isaac Muwonge from Nateete and Ivan Shinobi of Bugolobi, were arrested at Vurra Customs Post as they tried to clear a commuter taxi, registration number UAJ 215M into the Congolese town of Aru. The north-western region army spokesman, Lt. Robert Kamara, said the car belonging to a woman from Luzira, a Kampala suburb, went missing on Tuesday night from her residence.

Kamara said the suspects confessed stealing the car at 11:00pm after they were promised $400 (about sh600,000) upon delivery in DR Congo.

"A businessman, whose identity I will not reveal, gave them the vehicle keys and directed them where to find it."

They were to drive the car to the border post and call a Congolese army officer to help them take it across the border, Kamara added.

Witnesses said when the duo reached the border, they looked stranded and kept making several calls. Later, a border patrol team led by Capt. Paul Muwonge arrested them.
