Nigeria: LSHA Appeals to PHCN On Spinal Cord Injury Victim

Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Human Rights and Public Petitions has appealed to the Management of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), to speed-up the undertaking signed with Mr. Wasiu Adio Kareem, who had a spinal cord injury while discharging his official duty.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kabir Lawal made the plea when the management of PHCN and the victim appeared before the committee in Assembly complex.

According to the chairman, the management of PHCN having agreed on the request for life to be meaningful and worth living for the victim, it is important for the management of the PHCN to expedite action on the overseas treatment with a view to improving the present health condition of the victim.

Hon. Lawal however, promised that the State House of Assembly would assist the management of PHCN to secure reference letter from the state government hospital to facilitate the travelling document of the victim.

Earlier, representative of the Power Holding Company, Mr. Kunle Oyenusi who is in the legal department assured the House that PHCN has accepted to meet up all the request of the victim and ensure that all his entitlements and allowances are paid.

He also said that the victim is still a staff of the PHCN, promising that the management would do everything possible in ensuring that his life is better.

Parts of the requests by the victim include, overseas treatment, provision of electric wheel chairs, provision of basic amenities and retirement benefits.

It would be recalled that Mr. Wasiu Kareem had a spinal cord injury while carrying out his official duty in January 25th, 2005.
