Zambia: Police Grabbed My Phone - Witness

29 January 2008

Ndola — A WITNESS yesterday told the Lusaka High Court that a police officer grabbed a phone he was using after suspecting that it was stolen from late Chabmore Cleaning and Enterprises chief executive officer, Monica Chabwera Phiri.

Ernest Kaputo, 32, a Zesco metal fabricator testified before Judge Gregory Phiri that a Nokia 6280 was taken away from him in June by a female police officer only identified as Besa from Lusaka Central Police Station after investigations.

This is in a case in which Lusaka businesswoman Beatrice Hangwende Mwala, her elder brother, John, Mary Moyo, Joseph Banda, Charles Mwanza and Jungwe Magula were facing two counts of murdering Ms Phiri and attempted murder of Benny Banda.

He said he bought the phone from a man called Ernest at a makeshift shop (Kantemba) opposite Chelstone Police Station.

"When I went to his shop, the man asked me whether I was interested in the phone, he said I can give him the one I was using and a top up of K450,000. After two weeks I passed through the kantemba, gave Ernest the K450,000 and got the Nokia 6280," he said,

Mr Kaputo said Ms Besa called him on 0977-174198 and when he answered the call, she ordered him to report to the police station for questioning over a suspected stolen phone.

He said when he went to Lusaka Central Police Station, he met Ms Besa, and other police officers who took him to the Kantemba where he had bought the phone before they detained him at Chelstone police station for further investigations.
