South Africa: Jo'burg Agencies Impress Auditors

Johannesburg — THE auditor-general is expected to give companies owned by the Johannesburg municipality a clean bill of health for the first time in 12 years when a report on them is tabled by the council tomorrow.

A council official said the 2006-07 annual report of municipal entities showed all obtained unqualified audit opinions, with the exception of the problem-plagued Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market .

The fresh produce market is taken to task for not providing details on its arrears on municipal taxes and services charges, while the Johannesburg Development Agency got a mention for not providing information on four of its nonexecutive directors.

Metrobus was the only entity to include recommendations from its audit committee in its report. The committee recommended handing an investigation into the company's bank account over to the city.

Metrobus was also criticised for failing to disclose a new bank account opened during the financial year. This was later corrected.

Companies singled out for having "material losses" or fruitless expenditure were Pikitup, Metrobus, Metro Trading Company and the Johannesburg Fresh Product Market.
