Children, aged between two and nine, from 240 schools across 28 states of the federation, were at the weekend, inducted into the Jolly Phonics Children's Club (JPCC).

The event, which was held at the In-door Auditorium of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Complex, provided an opportunity for their parents, teachers and other stakeholders in the education sector to have a feel of Jolly Phonics system of learning.

Chief Executive Officer of Chelis Education Consult Limited, Mrs. Tina Udoji explained at the induction that Jolly Phonics is a research- based phonics programme, simple, fun, child-centred and multi-sensory; used to teach reading and writing to children at the foundation level. The 42 main sounds of the English language, she said, are taught through delightful stories and actions where the children get to hear the sounds and perform the actions, thereby making their learning permanent.

According to her, research had shown that the literacy age of children taught with Jolly Phonics is often a year ahead of their chronological ages and ahead of those not taught with it. The club, she stressed would provide a national and large forum where members can be updated on the current culture of literacy, as well as an educative platform to socialise with others. "The Jolly Phonics Children's Club and its management promise to continue to help as many Nigerians and educations as possible to utilise the findings of recent educational scientific researches to stay current and updated in literacy teaching, as is now practiced around the world", Udoji said.

Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Oluwagbemiga Benson acknowledged the system as nice and effective and the ceremony, the first of its kind in the state. Benson, who represented the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Sarah Sosan, regretted that Jolly Phonics was mostly used in private schools and that SUBEB would collaborate with the company to extend the programme to public schools.

"I have started discussions with the Chief Executive Officer, so that we can collaborate and improve our public schools by forming such a club. These children live in the same society, they take the same external examinations and attend the same universities with those in private schools, so there is need to equip them too", she said.

Commending the Jolly Phonics method, a teacher at Redeemer's International School, Lagos, Mrs. Lola Seth-David said the method helps children learn literacy earlier, faster and better. She therefore urged schools that are yet to start the programme to do so.
