Cameroon: Woman Rewarded For Philanthropy

Madam Marie Nomo Messina worked as a nurse in the Laquintinie hospital in Douala. Some 20 years ago, she abandoned her job at Laquintinie to take care of orphans and the less privileged in the society. While she was a nurse, Mme Nomo said she started developing compassion for the less privileged children. The compassion grew such that she had to abandon her job to take up the humanitarian task.

At the beginning, she said, the whole idea appeared a utopian scheme. She was interested in taking off but did not know how to begin. The start was therefore very difficult because she did not receive funds from someone beyond her immediate family. Her husband, Mr Nomo Messina, who now happens to be the backbone of the centre, brought the required funds. Nomo Messina recently won first prize for her initiative thanks to a programme broadcast by Peoples TV, Africa Initiative. Mme Nomo Messina's humanitarian association, "Main dans la main" carters for orphans.
