Foreign Ministers of the African Union's 53 member states met here for two days as part of the preparations of the agenda for the 10th ordinary session of the AU heads of the State and Government Assembly scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Discussions on the agenda included the presentation of the summit's theme "Africa's industrial development", the formation of the Union government, peace and Security and the election of members to the Council of Peace and Security and approval of the organ's budget for this year.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Professor Alpha Oumar Konare, on Sunday called on African foreign ministers to insure the implementation and respect of good governance, democracy, non-indifference, gender equality amongst other things which he said are principles adopted by the AU Member States themselves.

Professor Konare was addressing AU Foreign Affairs Ministers while presiding over Executive Council, within the framework of the Tenth Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government, scheduled to take place from 31st January - 2nd February 2008, in Addis Ababa.

Chairperson Konare said he was very concerned about the maintenance of peace and security within the continent, the reinforcement of the Commission as well as the representation of African diplomatic missions abroad, the leadership of Africa and its socio-economic and political integration and the need for an African common industrial policy.

"Africa is one from north to south and from east to west, there is nothing like northern Africa opposed to sub-Saharan Africa", said the Chairperson of the Commission. He also said partnerships should not be done in a fragmented way between stakeholders and African countries, but rather in solidarity by letting Africa speak with one voice.

The Council also considered reports from the Chairperson of the Commission, Permanent Representatives Committee and Ministerial Committee on Candidatures to the International System.

This was followed by the candidatures to the posts of chairman of the AU Commission and 10 commissioners, whose term in office has already expired.
