The Japanese government on Wednesday made available 172,000 US dollars for community development projects in Mozambique, in the areas of education, water supply and sanitation.
The grant contract for this sum was signed by Japanese ambassador Tatsuya miki, and the representatives of two non-governmental organizations, Elizabeth Sequeira, the executive director of the Progresso Association, and Peter Mers, the representative in Mozambique of the Swiss organisation Helvetas.
85,205 dollars of the Japanese grant go to Progresso to build and furnish a primary school (with four classrooms, three latrines and a water cistern), in the district of Mueda, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
Helvetas receives 86,200 dollars to build 24 latrines and dig six boreholes in Chiure and Ancuabe districts, also in Cabo Delgado.

"The Japanese government cooperates with Mozambique in three pillars, namely economic development, human capital and good governance", said the ambassador. "The promotion of education, water supply and sanitation fit into any of these pillars".
The representatives of the two NGOs stressed their commitment to continue working, in collaboration with the relevant national authorities, for the development of poor communities.
From 2001 to the present, the Japanese government, through its embassy in Maputo, has made about two million dollars available from 29 community projects in various parts of the country.
