Economists say the US is staring at a possible recession, a fact that even the Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke has acknowledged.

What is not clear yet is how deep the recession is likely to cut, and for how long it is likely to last. The effect of the impending recession on the economies of its Western trading allies and the so called emerging markets with close ties to US businesses is also yet to be established, but what most analysts agree is that being the economic superpower it is, when the US sneezes the world catches a cold.
