Bujumbura

The International Leadership Foundation began a training program today to teach cabinet ministers and governors of province to better work for the benefit of the population. The theme of this training program is â-šThe transformation of the Leadership towards the Revival of Burundi." In his opening address opening this three-day event, President Nkurunziza said that â-šBurundi is endowed with all potentialities to set it on the orbit of the prosperous countries...but the Burundian leadership has to change its mentality first in order to reach this aim."

Cabinet ministers and governors of provinces will discuss how to change their attitudes. Changing mentalities was the pillar of the current President of the Republic's address when he was sworn-in two years ago. Yet nothing has utterly changed. Economic crimes have increased; violations of human rights has not decreased; the illegal sale of the Falcon 50 jet continues to haunt the government; bribes that the ruling party received before the reconstruction of the road Bujumbura-Rumonge has internal strife within CNDD-FDD and the murder of 31 innocent people in Muyinga province continue to dog the government.

The president of the Republic could boast that he established free primary education and free medical treatment to the under-five but students have continued to pay other fees and providing free medical treatment for children has crippled the public hospitals with debts that some foresee might bring an end to this policy.

A growing number of people believe that decision-makers in Burundi start by taking care of themselves before serving the country. The government's determination to alleviate the hardships of the population has found expression in word alone.
