Burundi: Joachim Chissano Calls On FNL to Resume Talks With the Government

31 January 2008

Bujumbura — The former Mozambican president, Joachim Chissano, called on PALIPEHUTU-FNL to resume talks with the government of Burundi after meeting with the President of the Republic of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza. President Chissano said that he came to Burundi with a message of peace and made it clear that he is not in Burundi to replace the facilitator: "There is a facilitator and I am not here to replace the facilitator, but we are here to call on each side to resume talks."

Joachim Chissano made his first visit to Burundi on 29 January 2008. The National Council of Churches of Burundi, Conseil National des Eglises du Burundi, (CNEB), invited him to share his advice on how to manage the post-conflict period.

President Chissano has already met the top authorities of the country. Many decades of war tore apart Mozambique. The mediation and the management of the post-conflict period in this country still attract analysts in search of insights into the peace building process and conflict resolution through mechanisms which do not include the strong-arm tactics.
