The Italian government has offered Mozambique a million euros (about 1.48 million US dollars) to assist victims of the current flooding in the central provinces.

According to a Thursday press release from the Italian embassy, the money will be spent over 12 months, and will be directed to health services for flood victims, food security, water supply, housing and the re-establishment of income generating activities.

An important element in the Italian intervention, claims the release, "will be the involvement of the communities themselves, achieved through education and awareness campaigns".

The release says the activities "will be managed directly by the cooperation office in the Italian Embassy", and will also rely on cooperation from NGOs working on the ground.
