Burundi: The National Council of Bashingantahe Calls On the Government to Pay More Attention to Security Issues

2 February 2008

Bujumbura — The national council of Bashingantahe (notables) has called on the government of Burundi to pay more attention to security issues. Ambassador Balthazar Habonimana, the assistant of the chairman of this council, says that the authorities of Burundi seem to take pleasure in the insecurity that the population is facing." The council of Bashingantahe worries that the government's silence over the escalating violence may damage its reputation.

Ambassador Habonimana said the disarmament of the population should proceed as soon as possible.

The government has remained inactive for months despite the growing trend of violence in various provinces of Burundi. The security minister, Police commissioner Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, tried to implement policy measures that would help bring security to the country. These measures seem to have failed as people continue to die on a daily basis. Yesterday afternoon, suspected FNL combatants killed the chief of Mutambu zone of Mutambu commune in the south of Bujumbura province.

Although internal security remains a source of concern, the Burundian government continues to seek international recognition and today the government of Burundi has cause to be happy since Burundi was appointed to the Peace and Security commission of the African Union that the Gabonese Jean Ping will lead.
