Addis Ababa — The Ethiopian Media Women Association (EMWA) said on Tuesday it was to publish a media code of conduct aimed at ensuring sensitive reporting on sensitive issues.

This was reveled at a half-day workshop the association organized editors of the private and government media organizations to sensitize media professionals on the code of conduct, which was prepared in partnership with sister associations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania The project forms part of the East Africa media Women's Associations Advocacy Campaign against CSAE.

"The purpose of code of Ethics and conduct was to lay down a set of standards and core values which journalists and media practioners reporting on sexual abuse and exploitation of children in Ethiopia shall adhere to in order to promote, respect, implement and protect the rights of children," EMWA Executive Director Abebech Wolde said in her opening speech of the work shop.

The code of conduct is also recommended for wider usage as a voluntary standard of self-regulation and evaluation to journalists in Ethiopia, the Executive Director noted.

She said the code of conduct will be printed in English and Amharic after inputs from journalists, editors and other stakeholders to make sure that conforms to the four basic principles of the rights of children: the right to non-discrimination, best interest of the child, Survival and development and participation.

EMWA is a non-for profit, non-partisan professional association established in 1999 to promote women's rights and issues of women's concerns in and through the media.

Child rights issues are one of the major issues of women's concern.
