Port Louis — Among 3,029 Mauritians who obtained an entry visa into the United Kingdom, 26 had taken advantage of the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme. This is considered as an "excellent UK immigration category for entry of successful people with sought-after skills".

From the UK government's point of view, the idea is to "bring the most highly skilled to the UK, helping to meet the government's strategic objective to boost its economy".

This programme, created for highly skilled individuals wishing to remain or to come to the UK to work as employed or self-employed persons, was introduced in 2002. However, the latest changes to the programme were brought in November 2006. People interested in benefiting from this programme do not need a prior offer for a job or to take up self-employment opportunities to have their visa application approved by the Home Office's Immigration and Nationality Directorate.

Young and learned

In fact, it differs from the work permit scheme, as it does not require an employer to obtain a work permit. It does not even require a detailed business plan or investment in the UK. Candidates actually need to obtain a minimum of 75 points to become eligible for the programme. Of course, qualifications are the characteristics that bring the highest number of points to potential candidates. From 50 points for a PhD to 35 for a Masters degree or 30 points for a Bachelor degree, candidates with none of the mentioned qualifications simply do not score any points. This is a hint of the high importance given by the British authorities to skilled and qualified potential migrants.

The income, previous work experience and previous country of residence also play a part in the grant of the specific work permit. For instance, candidates can gain five points for UK work experience. Candidates also have to show their English language ability corresponding to the International English Language Testing System qualification of less than two years old.

Age also appears as an important criterion. In fact, the youngest candidates have the best chances to be successful in obtaining the programme. Those under 27 get no fewer than 20 points while those above 32 simply do not get any So, those interested in the programme should be quick in taking advantage of it!
