Makurdi — Governor Gabriel TorSuswam's first major project - the on going construction/rehabilitation of township roads in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, has reached 100kms so far, government spokesman, Mr. Cletus Akwaya has said.
The on going township roads project which has extended to the three other major towns in the state namely, Otukpo, Gboko and Katsina-Ala respectively was awarded to Hajaig Construction Company. The contract which was awarded to Hajaig Construction Limited specifies the design and construction of modern walk ways and drainages to accompany the newly constructed major streets as well as the major roads still undergoing rehabilitation.
A score card presented by the government's spokesman who is also Governor Suswam's Special Adviser on Media and public Affairs, Mr. Cletus Akwaya said work done so far has reached 100kms.
Titled "How Benue fared in 2007 under the able leadership of Governor Suswam and his deputy, Chief Steve Lawani", the score card reviews the activities of the governor's first six months in office, covering the period he spent on assumption of office in 2007.
The rehabilitation/construction of roads in Makurdi, is only part of the electoral promises the governor had made to the people and he is just delivering on them. This project is going hand in hand with several other projects to make life meaningful to the generality of the people in the state", a further statement from Akwaya said.
The other projects in construction, according to the score card are: the award of contract worth N556.4 million for the engineering design of 28 rural roads across the state as well as the award of contract worth over N10 billion for the construction of six major roads across the state. These roads are Anyiin-Abeda-Amaafu-Abaji road, Owukpa-Igumale-Agila road, Adikpo-Ikogen-Jato-Aka road, Eke-Elengbencho-Ugbokolo road, 72 Airborn Battalion access road and North/Bank-Uni-Agric road.
Akwaya said the entire road project is designed to run in phases and will be well supervised to ensure the contractors deliver on time and in good quality.
Property & Environment recalls that during his visit to Makurdi last year, President Umar Yar'adua had commissioned some of the completed roads in Makurdi. The president who was conducted round by his host, Governor Suswam, said he was impressed by all standards. He therefore assured he will work with governors, particularly Suswam in realizing his Seven-Point agenda in the development of the country.
Yar'adua also promised to work with Suswam in the area of power generation as he acknowledged that the large coal deposit in the Owukpa area of the state is a potential source of electricity.
Suswam who conducted the president round some of his structural achievements, said the zeal his administration attaches to road construction epitomizes the approach to the over all development of the state.
