Nairobi — A policeman captured on TV shooting at two demonstrators in Kisumu last month is to face murder charges in court.
Police Commissioner Hussein Ali directed that the constable be charged with murder after an internal inquiry found that there was evidence connecting him to the shooting of the two demonstrators.
Television stations caught on camera a policeman shooting at two youths at the height of the post-election violence in Kisumu.
The clip showed on international and local news bulletins, further showed the officer kicking the victims as they rolled in pain on the ground. The officer then walked away.
The two, Mr George William Onyango and Ishmael Chacha died as a result of the shooting on January 16.
The inquest team, which held its sittings in Kisumu, arrived at the verdict after more than two weeks of investigations.
The team consisting of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), interviewed witnesses including other police officers.
A ballistic analysis was also conducted on the accused officer's rifle to determine if it was used to fire the killer shots.
The investigators also reviewed a video clip showing the shooting incident.
Scene of Crime experts also visited and examined the spot where murder allegedly occurred.
Members of the probe team also recorded statements including one by the accused officer.
The youngsters were shot in Kondele part of the town in chaotic street protests which had been occasioned by a call for mass action by leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement.
They were protesting against the re-election of President Kibaki, in disputed results after the December polls.
Indications are the officer will be arraigned in the High Court either in Nakuru or Nairobi.
