Delta — The Delta State House of Assembly has set up an 11-member committee on waste management charged with the responsibility of proffering solutions to proper refuse management in the state.
This was disclosed by the chairman, House Committee on Land, Mrs Omawunmi Udoh, while addressing a stakeholders meeting in Asaba yesterday.
The committee chairman decried the incompetence in waste management and called for urgent solutions in addressing the issue of waste which is harmful for the development of the environment and economy as a whole.
According to her, "it seems that no one is responsible for waste management at the local government level", which is why the waste management board and the local government council often disagreed on that issue.
Some environment stakeholders have also identified the discrepancy between the national policy on environmental sanitation and the law setting up the waste management board as a factor hampering effective waste management practices.
They noted the importance of private sector participation in tackling waste management in the state which would form part of the solution in combating it.
They further advised the government to play supervisory role and provide the enabling environment for private operators. The committee is headed by the state commissioner for environment and has one week to present its recommendations to the government.
Environmental waste management remains a burning issue for the growth and development of any nation. Issues of oil, land degradation, afforestation are all important and this is why the Federal Government is doing all it can to ensure effective waste management which if addressed could bring about employment opportunities, growth and development for the country.

on waste management, i would like to suggest to the 11- member commmittee to consider the use of incineration. there are affordable mobile incinarators on the market with low running and maintenance costs.
