Burundi: Col. Vital Bangirimana Continues to Elaborate His Confessions

8 February 2008

Bujumbura — Col. Vital Bangirimana continues to create stirs in high walks of the security and defence bodies. He has now revealed that he consulted the head of the National Intelligence Services, General Adolphe Nshimirimana. The National Intelligence Services constitute the presidential police.

The confessions left by Col. Bangirimana led the Defence Minister, Lt General Germain Niyoyankana, to give explanations to the press wherein he rejected his involvement in the extrajudicial executions of 31 residents of Muyinga in mid 2006. He had however remained silent over this case until Col Bangirinama, now in hiding in Tanzania, exposed the rot under the carpet in revealing that the top officers of the army were directly involved in the executions of thirty-one persons suspected to be FNL combatants.

The government of Burundi has tried to hush up this case which continues to stain top authorities. Many administrative authorities denied that the executions of Muyinga never existed. Investigations that were carried out in this province to shed a light on this case were never made public.

Until January 2008, Col Bangirimana continued to work in the high walks of the army. He fled to Tanzania fearing for his security. He has accepted that he bears responsibility in these executions and that he is ready for trail. He however says that fears other top authorities involved in this case which continue to haunt the CNDD-FDD-led government. The Human Rights Watch says that Tanzania waits the end of the paper work on Burundi's side to extradite Col. Bangirinama.
