Nigeria: Obasanjo is My Leader, Says Yar'Adua

Abeokuta — President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua yesterday in Abeokuta, described former President, Olusegun Obasanjo as "my leader".

The president who spoke at the wedding reception held at the Valleyview Auditorium, of the Ogun State Government House in Abeokuta for Major Adeboye Obasanjo, son of the ex-president and his new wife, Daisy, said his greatest wish for his predecessor was long life and good life.

He said the ceremony and the large attendance of dignitaries shows the love people have for the Obasanjos.

While congratulating Obasanjo, Yar'Adua also charged the couple to uphold the values of marriage and live happily as one.

According to the President, "you (the couple) have brought great honour to your parents and you should uphold your marriage"

He prayed that God in his infinite mercy would bless the couple as they would be facing the challenges of life together.

At the Alake of Egbaland's Palace where he paid a courtesy call on Oba Adedotun Aremu Gba-debo, Yar'Adua thanked the people of Egbaland for their support for him during his campaign for the office of President, as well as the votes they cast for him.

"I am here to appreciate the support of Egba people and Ogun State in general because this is my first time of coming here since I became President, and when I recalled your total support during the electioneering campaigns and your massive support for me one can not but appreciate you", Yar'Adua said.

The Alake, Oba Gbadebo, told Yar'Adua that past administrations did not give Egbaland enough attention, adding that now that he (Yar'Adua) is the President, the Egba people would expect compensation from the federal government.

The Alake who spoke through the Secretary General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Dr. Lateef Adegbite, expressed confidence in Yar'Adua's genuine commitment to the rule of law, adding that the president has clearly demonstrated that through his style of leadership.

The royal father however assured the President that the entire people of Egbaland, and indeed Ogun State would continue to render unflinching support to his administration.

Dignitaries at Obasanjo's son's wedding include, Governors of Ogun, Osun, Kwara and Katsina States, the Senate President, David Mark, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole, among others.
