Kampala — THE government is to construct a centre that will help the youth identify and develop their potentials. The youth centre will be developed by Kampala City Council, UN-Habitat and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in a move to accommodate the needs of the youths.

The State Minister for Youth, Maj. James Kinobe, said the centre would be constructed on five-acres Kabalagala, a Kampala suburb for all the youth in the district.

"We shall have in place a computer centre, play ground for various sports activities, exhibition halls, art and craft centres as well as training centres for skills development," Maj. Kinobe said.

The Minister made the remarks while presiding over the opening of Mengo Youth Development Link (Mydel) Vocational Skills Training Institute at Mengo-Kisenyi in Central Division on Friday.

Mydel is collaborating with Youth Action International (YAI), Uganda to provide vocational skills to the marginalised youth especially girls in the City slums for both income generation and skills development.

The project is set to benefit over 150 youth for the first years who will be passed out every six months after equipping them skills in boutique management, tailoring and wood curving among others.

It targets youth from the poorest areas of the Central Division in Kisenyi I, II, III, Bukesa, Kagugube and Mengo. "We have acquired a five acre land, KCC has given us Shs100 million and UN-Habitat has contributed Shs60 million to enable us start," Maj. Kinobe said.
