The Mozambican government is to add to fleet of the Maputo publicly owned bus company, TPM, another five new gas-powered buses by June 2008, as a means to offset the impact of the current volatility of oil prices on the world market.
This was disclosed earlier this week by Transport Minister, Antonio Mungwambe during a televised debate following the riots that plunged the capital into a total chaos for two days starting on Tuesday.
Currently TPM is running three gas-powered buses operating on an experimental basis.

Last year the Mozambican government ordered four Chinese manufactured gas buses, of which one was destroyed by fire during an operation to clean the gas tanks on the top of the bus in a filling station in the city of Matola.
No casualties were reported in that incident.
The project of gas-powered buses was introduced to try to minimise the cost of fuel. This initiative is to be extended to other passenger transport vehicles, and later to private cars.
