Maputo — A dog killed and partially devoured a security guard on Saturday morning in the Belo Horizonte locality, about 17 kilometres west of Maputo.
What makes the case particularly shocking is that the dog was owned by one of the recently appointed Assistant Attorney-Generals, Angelo Matusse.
The attack occurred when the security guard (whose name AIM was not able to obtain) attempted to put the two dogs who also guard the house in their kennels for the night.
The animal mauled the guard to death, and ate parts of his body. When the police turned up they immediately shot dead both dogs.
Neighbours said they had already given warnings about the savage nature of Matusse's dogs. Recently one of the dogs had jumped over the fence and bitten a passer-by, causing serious injuries.
The police also had to calm down the neighbours who were threatening to lynch Matusse. According to one woman, interviewed by the private television station, STV, they found it shocking that when Matusse returned home, he demanded to know who had killed his dogs. He thus seemed more concerned with the fate of the animals than with that of his security guard.
