Burundi: Unidentified People Wound a Trader in Cibitoke

12 February 2008

Bujumbura — Unidentified people shot a trader of Nyeshenza in Cibitoke province yesterday. The victim was seriously wounded. He is currently in the hospital in Bujumbura. Despite the escalating trend of violence in Burundi, the President of the Republic, Pierre Nkurunziza, who is touring the United States, says that Burundi is secure.

On 28 January, the United Nations placed Burundi in Phase Three. The United Nations made this move after considering the violence that took place over the past months, killings that targeted opposition politicians and the killing of the French worker Agnès Bury. This designation restricts the movement of the UN workers. The same phase was in effect in the provinces of Bubanza, Cibitoke and Bujumbura. The Integrated UN Bureau in Burundi (BINUB), assures Burundians that the new development will not affect the activities of humanitarian agencies.

Recently, various ministers of President Nkurunziza's government gave contradictionary explanations for the current escalation of violence which Head of State himself denies. The information minister and spokesman for the government blamed PALIPEHUTU-FNL for the violence, while the security minister said that undisciplined agents of the security and defence forces also play a great part.
