Banjul — Unimpeachable sources close to the State House in Banjul say The Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh is suspected to be suffering from "infirmity of mind and as such had been acting strangely during private and public functions." The Presidential aide says the President developed his mental illness shortly after the March 2006 coup attempt, which almost devastated Africa's most brutal dictator. " HE Jammeh has been talking to himself. We are all worried that he might as well one day walk out naked in the streets of Kanilai. Everyone here is worried. Many Service Chiefs are aware of his mental problem. His wife is aware. His Mother is also aware of HE'S mental problem. His madness directs him to women and animals. He has been touching barren women, thus violating their privacy. I accompanied the president each time, he attends to his patients. This is not normal. HE is sick and needs urgent help." said the Presidential aide.
The Presidential aide said The Gambian leader hardly sleeps at night and had been making noise at the State House. " He spent part of his time manufacturing drugs for his patients. He also shouts at night. He sometimes walked by himself unattended. There was this day that the guards could not find him. His unofficial wife has been coming here since the departure of Zeinab. She sleeps here. The guards escorts her to and fro from Banjul." said our source.
Well placed sources said President Jammeh had also lost his memory, as he hardly remembers date, names of guards attached to him and some family members. " Prior to the demise of Solomon Jammeh, we were told by a grand marabout that the nation is in the hands of a sick President. The same Marabout also said a Jolla was going to replace HE Jammeh. This was one of the reasons, why Jammeh developed distrust for Solomon. He moved him to Farafenni just to exile him from Kanilai. Solomon and I both attended the same military Academy in Nigeria." said our source.
According to state house insiders, Jammeh is unable to effectively discharge his functions as Head of State due to mental illness. " He is not paying any attention to his responsibilities as a leader. He lacks sense of direction and memory. He does whatever comes to his mind. Some of our men are working on finding a solution to the problem. I will not disclose what these plans are for security reasons. All I can tell you is that HE is sick." said the security official.
Under the Gambian constitution, the Speaker of the National Assembly is empowered by law to set up an enquiry to investigate the President's mental fitness.
The President can only be impeached if a certified medical doctor declares him insane or unfit to run the Presidency. The Speaker would then okay a bill to impeach the President. A three third majority is needed to give a blessing to such a bill.
Meanwhile, reports have it that Speaker Fatou Jahumpa Ceesay, Gen. Lang Tombong Tamba, DIG Modou Gaye and other unnamed officials have been openly voicing their concern over the President's mental health problems. " I do know for a fact that the President's ailing health is a subject of debate among Government officials. Everyone is saying that he is sick, but no one is bold enough to sponsor a motion for his impeachment. I also do know that the Speaker, Lang and other Security Chiefs have been discussing the President's health problem." said the Presidential aide.
