Cameroon: Celebration Focuses on Regional Integration and Peace

Though the national youth day celebration is a cyclical event that takes place every year, the peculiarity of each celebration depends on the theme and special touch given to the match past that usually characterise this event. The specificity of this year's celebration in Yaounde, was the participation of a group known as CEMAC group and the nature of messages brandished by the youths.

The messages brandished this year revolved around the theme of peace and regional integration, responsible citizenship and moral rearmament in the society in general. As concerns the calls for peace and regional integration, one of the messages read, "Let's cultivate the values of tolerance, guarantor of peace and social cohesion" and the other, "Let's privilege dialogue and consultation to build a strong and prosperous Cameroon" and "Yes to sub regional integration, backbone to solidarity and sustainable development". Besides the call for peace, was the call for moral rearmament through messages such as; "together, let us restore ethical values in our country", "Cameroonian youths say no to corruption, "together, for a culture of excellence in Cameroon", and so forth. To boost it up, a group who excelled academically last year, matched in a special group known as the group of excellence. The desire for greater regional integration was manifested by a match past of a group of youths brandishing the name and flags of all CEMAC member countries.

Concerning responsible citizenship and moral rearmament, the messages called on youths to desist from practices such as drug consumption, fiscal fraud, corruption, armed banditry and HIV/AIDS. "let's work for the promotion of a culture of excellence among youths", Cameroonian youth says no to corruption", and a host of other messages.

Other highlights included the imitation of certain professions by the students. Like there was a youth who matched past a farmer, the other as a fisherman and others match dressed in the traditional attires from certain parts of the country. Another peculiarity was the fact that, all the primary schools sang the same song, committing themselves to be responsible and hardworking citizens in the future. The only sour note was the absence of the indomitable Lions, who the thousands of youths who thronged the 20th May Avenue, were eager to see.
