Botswana: Rape Incidents Worry Police

Molopolole — Molepolole police are concerned over women who patronise shebeens and night clubs unaccompanied at night regardless of their vulnerability to rape.

Police Station Commander, Superintendent Bee Majakumbisi raised the concern after three women were allegedly raped in Molepolole this week at midnight on return from shebeens.

He said three unknown men allegedly raped a 27-year-old woman of Borakalalo ward around 11 pm. No one was arrested. The station commander also said three men aged 23, 18 and 20 years of Moshaweng settlement in Kweneng West allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl after some drinks at a shebeen.

It was said at around three o'clock in the afternoon; the accused persons dragged the woman to a nearby bush and allegedly raped her several times. The accused were all arrested because they were well known.

Another rape incident was reported in Mokgalong ward in Molepolole where a 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped at around 1.00 am when she was from a night club. Police said the victim's version was that she can identify the culprit. Police investigations are still on.

Supt. Majakumbisi warned women to refrain from visiting alone at night as they attracted rapists.

He said usually during the weekends bars closed at 12 0'clock. In another issue, the station commander appealed to residents of Molepolole and surrounding lands to keep their children away from playing near ponds and pools. He said the grass has grown thick and tall which covers some boreholes, and making them invisible. He said a six-year-old child drowned in a pond and died at Ntloedibe ward recently while playing with others.
