Amidst criticism that the Liberia Truth and Reconciliation Commission will achieve no good results rather than to open old wounds, the Open Society Initiative has expressed enormous success so far in the process.
The initiative which is one of the sponsors of the TRC said it is amazed that since the start of the process that brings both the perpetrators and victims to tell of their participation and story of the war that occurred in the country, not one perpetrator has requested amnesty.
Speaking during a recent visit as one of the delegates of Mr. George Soro, the Open Society Initiative President, Aryeh Neier, said this is totally a sign of genuine remorse on the part of the perpetrators unlike the South African truth telling process.
Mr. Neier stated that the TRC has made headways especially with the over 20,000 statements taken already and with the public hearings ongoing but what is most surprising is that no statement giver has asked for amnesty before giving their testimony.
He said the Liberian TRC process is a move ahead of what took place in South Africa therefore he hopes that the process would bring about sanity in the country that people would be willing to bear responsibility of crimes they committed and that would bring about total reconciliation.
