Mozambique: Seminar On Results From Research Projects

13 February 2008

Maputo — Mozambique's Minister of Science and Technology, Venancio Massingue, on Wednesday stressed that scientific research, technological development and innovation are determinant factors for the development of a competitive economy.

He was speaking in Maputo, at the opening of a seminar to announce the results of projects financed by the National Research Fund, a body set up to promote the spread of scientific knowledge, research, innovation and the training of researchers, in order to contribute to poverty reduction and socio-economic development.

"We must use scientific knowledge to build success in all sectors, since action on the ground is now our only choice", said Massingue.

The world is undergoing constant change, thanks to scientific advances, he stressed. As a result those who do not follow scientific and technological developments quickly become professionally obsolete, and their companies lose their competitive edge.

Massingue reiterated the importance of government determination and commitment in the building of a National Science and Technology System. Priority components of this included expanding the number of qualified and motivated researchers, adequate research infrastructures, a sustainable funding system, and effective coordination.

But the Minister regretted that, of the 23 projects initially approved by the National Research Fund, only 18 had achieved the desired results.

He challenged the Fund to ensure that the financial resources mobilized are applied in projects that seek solutions for the main priorities identified and which have the greatest chances of success.

Participants at Wednesday's seminar analysed, among others, projects on malaria treatment, food security, and the use of natural stone in building.
