A tremor measuring 5.5 on the open-ended Richter scale rocked the South Kivu town of Bukavu in the early hours of 14 February and could be felt some 200 kilometres from the epicentere, according to the head of the volcano observatory in Goma, capital of the neighbouring North Kivu province, Dieudonne Wafula.
"This strong earthquake was actually just another aftershock of the real earthquake that struck on 3 February," he said. That initial quake killed around 45 people in Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
Christophe Illemassene, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Kinshasa, said 44 people had been slightly injured in the latest tremor.
"People will once again sleep outdoors for fear of their homes collapsing," said Wafula.
According to Bukavu's mayor, Bonga Laisi, 3,465 buildings lay damaged before the most recent aftershock, since when a crisis committee has been established, comprising representatives of the government, the police, aid agencies and the United Nations mission in DRC.
Illemassene, said 12,590 people (2,518 households) had up to Wednesday benefited from the distribution of non-food items, including tents or marquees, soap and other materials.
