The government of Greece on Tuesday donated over 9 million to the World Food Program (WFP) to help the UN agency's mal nutrition and child survival projects in Ethiopia.

After receiving the donation on behalf of his organization, WFP Country Director Mohammed Diab said the donation comes at the right time as the project often suffers from being under funded and thanked the government of Greece for taking an initiative to assist the neediest Ethiopian people, according to a statement from the UN agency.

The project, the statement said is currently implemented in 342 districts throughout the country by governmental and nongovernmental partners, assists a yearly average of 1.1 million beneficiaries by targeting malnourished, lactating and pregnant women and children less than 5 years of age.

The quarterly supplementary ration consists of 25 kg of fortified blended food and three liters of fortified vegetable oil, the statement added.

Under the Targeted Supplementary Food Program, mothers also receive basic nutrition education on how best to use the food, and on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the early months after birth, according to the statement.

Asked for his comments on Greek's latest donation to Ethiopia, Greek ambassador to Ethiopia Michael C. Daratzikis said his country was committed to help Ethiopia's efforts to tackle mal nutrition and ensure child survival.

"My country's commitment is aimed at assisting Ethiopia in the ongoing struggle against under nutrition and the eradication of poverty," Ambassador Michael C. Daratzikis told The Daily Monitor by phone.

"This is a clear demonstration of Greece's courage in entering the struggle against undernutrition," he said adding Greek's assistance was based on the confidence it place in WFP's modalities of operations.." He also said that Ethiopia and greece have a lot in common with a history going back over 4000 years.
