Burundi: The Government Takes Action to End the Violence

The government has started to pacify the population after a period of silence and disagreements over the recent wave of insecurity.
Today, the First Vice-President of the Republic, Dr Yves Sahinguvu, along with the security and the interior ministers met with the administrators of the urban communes and the security institutions of Bujumbura at Centre Jeunes Kamenge. Kamenge is one the communes where the hunt between PALIPEHUTU-FNL combatants and the agents of the Intelligence services took place culminating in the death of the chief of Teza quarter. The First Vice-President of the Republic who says that reports that he gets as well as the daily reports of the media show that the security situation is alarming added that the â-šDemocracy does not pass through the elimination of a political opponent."
During the meeting, it was noticed that the impunity, the massive rural exodus, drug dealers and thieves play their part in the insecurity that has characterized the city of Bujumbura over the last months.
The first Vice-President of the Republic said that security committees should be set at the grassroots level. These committees which should be set up in all quarters should include all people from all the walks of the society in order to guarantee its effectiveness. These committees are meant to strengthen the trilogy - Security Forces- Administration- the population. The First Vice-President of the Republic said that he going to continue his campaign for security along with four ministers in various areas of Burundi.
Although the First Vice-President of the Republic shows his worries over the violence which has increased over the past days, the leaders of the ruling party, CNDD-FDD, and the President of the Republic continue preach to whoever wants to listen that security has improved in Burundi over the past years compared to the wartime.
