Burundi: The Blockage in the National Assembly House Looms Ahead

13 February 2008

Bujumbura — The blockage in the lower house of the national parliament looms ahead after the congress of CNDD-FDD expelled Alice Nzomukunda from this party.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Hon Pie Ntavyohanyuma, said that Alice Nzomukunda was no longer part of the bureau of the national parliament. They have already removed her habitual chair. Opposition parties have however refused this dismissal in the bureau of the assembly although they recognised that the congress of the CNDD-FDD had expelled her from the party.

Today, the leader of CNDD-FDD, Hon Jérémie Ngendakumana, held a press conference in which he said that â-šAny Member of the Parliament or any party that would like to bring back problems in the Parliament because Alice should take her in his party and propose her in the parliament in order to be elected in the bureau if he has the right." â-šWhen you are expelled from a party by a congress you cannot lodge a charge, it is like a father who denies paternity to his child, there is nowhere the child can lodge a charge," he added. â-šAlice is no longer a member of CNDD-FDD. She has been expelled and laws are clear that she cannot remain in the bureau of the assembly."

The activities of the national assembly were recently disturbed due to the absence of the speaker of the parliament and opposition parties which reject the dismissal of Hon. Alice Nzomukunda as the First President of the National Assembly.
