The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has condemned the murder of a 38 year-old woman in Tappita District, Nimba County, and the subsequent mob violence on Wednesday 13 February, which resulted in the death of at least one other person.

According to an UNMIL statement, the mob also inflicted injuries on some other persons, including personnel of the Liberian National Police, (LNP) and UNMIL as well as some suspects.

The mission is deeply saddened by the loss of life and condemns the violent acts of the mob, including the burning down of the Tappita Police station, where some suspects were being detained.

UNMIL Military personnel from the Bangladeshi Battalion and police officers from the Nigerian Formed Police Unit, FPU, have been supporting LNP officers in the area to prevent the violence and maintain calm and order. The situation has now been brought under control.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Ms. Ellen Margrethe Løj, urges the people of Tappita to exercise restraint and allow full investigations to be conducted by law enforcement agencies.

The SRSG further calls on all the citizens of the area to remain calm, and refrain from any acts that could only create disorder and unease within the community and set Liberia backwards.

UNMIL encourages all Liberians not to take the law into their own hands but to fully and constantly show respect for the Rule of Law, refrain from attacking police personnel and property and allow justice to take its course in all situations.
