Eritrea: President Holds Talks With SPLM Delegation

President Isaias Afwerki today received and held talks in Massawa with an SPLM delegation headed by General Salva Kiir Myardit, First Vice President of the Sudanese Government of National Unity and President of the South Sudan government.
In the meeting, the two sides assessed the efforts and cooperation made over the past couple of years to promote comprehensive peace in the Sudan. They also reached an understanding to strengthen bilateral and mutual cooperation, in line with the historical and strategic relations between Eritrea and the South Sudan, at the government and Front level.
As regards the issue of peace and stability in the Sudan, the two sides equally agreed to reinforce and implement the Naivasha Agreement concluded between the SPLM and the Sudanese government, as well as the Asmara Agreement that was signed between the Sudanese Government of National Unity and the East Sudan Front. Both sides also agreed to work jointly towards promoting a just and lasting peace in Darfur.
Moreover, after reviewing developments in the region in general and the Horn in particular, they asserted that they would work together so as to ensure peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
Following the talks, President Isaias told journalists that Eritrea, as part of the partners for peace, would continue to fulfill what is expected of her towards promoting comprehensive and lasting peace in the Sudan. In this respect, General Salva Kiir's latest visit would help to reinforce the previous endeavors made by the two sides, he added.
General Salva Kiir Myardit pointed out on his part that Eritrea's role is significant in promoting peace and stability in the Sudan, as well as in securing peace in the Horn region. He further stated "We are ready to work jointly with Eritrea to this end." General Salva Kiir also expressed appreciation for the warm welcome accorded to the SPLM delegation.
President Isaias hosted a luncheon reception in honor of the First Vice President of the Sudanese Government of National Unity. Also in the afternoon hours today, Gen. Salva Kiir visited Massawa Port, during which he inspected its expansion, modernization and operational schemes. Besides, he visited the Pre-cast Housing and Bridges Construction Plant, during which he receive briefings by experts.
Meanwhile, a PFDJ team headed by Mr. Yemane Gebreab, Head of Political Affairs at the Front, which also included Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, Head of Economic Affairs at the Front, and Mr. Abdalla Jabir, Head of Organizational Affairs at the Front, respectively last night held discussions with the SPLM delegation on relations and cooperation between the two fronts. Assessing the previous meetings held between the two fronts, both sides conducted extensive exchange of views regarding the Naivasha Agreement and its implementation, as well as the peace process in Darfur and the East Sudan Agreement. Furthermore, they agreed to continue such meetings.

The two sides also reached an understanding to further deepen the existing Eritrean-Sudanese relations in general and that of the PFDJ and the SPLM, in particular.
Present at the meeting on the side of the SPLM delegation were Dr. Luka Biyong Deng, Minister for Presidential Affairs, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Minister of Regional Cooperation in the South Sudan government, and other officials.
The SPLM delegation left for home later today.
