Kampala — THE Gulu district council has constituted a committee to probe corruption in the Northern Uganda Social Action (NUSAF) programme.

"NUSAF has been riddled with challenges ranging from lack of accountability to outright corruption. Though we are now in the dying minutes of the programme, we should be united in ensuring accountability and transparency," said the district chairman, Norbert Mao while inaugurating the eight-member committee last week.

"It is within the mandate of this council to cause a probe into the conduct of NUSAF projects so that those who have abused the projects can be punished."

Mao, however, commended the effort of the acting NUSAF district technical officer, Dr. Tony Aliro, in ensuring accountability of funds by the communities.

"As at December 31, 2007, accountability for sub-projects stood at 92% with sh664,554,731 not accounted for, but by January 31, 2008, there was an improvement with 97% of the money accounted for though sh295m is yet to be accounted for by the community sub-projects," added Mao.

He revealed that the World Bank through the NUSAF management unit had released sh1.2b for the completion of sub-projects.

The district, Mao said, was expecting sh637,828,865 for the completion of 29 new sub-projects mainly for the construction of low-cost housing units.
