DOCTORS under the aegis of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) will tomorrow Friday 1, 2008 begin what it explained as "one day solidarity strike" together with its parent body, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) over federal government's failure to effect the Medical Salary Scale (Mss being canvassed by the doctors, amongst other demands.

Speaking to newsmen on Monday in Lagos, NARD's national president, Dr. Ladipo Adepoju stated that the planned action became imperative to reinforce the primacy of the doctor as an important resource in the healthcare delivery system.

Ladipo stated that the federal government has repudiated all agreement signed with the parent body NMA to improve the condition of work for the medical profession.

He said the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Scale (CONTISS) which was to redress the imbalances in previous salary structures turned out to be the albatross.

Subsequently, NARD like NMA, has demanded for the immediate withdrawal of the CONTISS salary structure as it affects medical and dental practitioners..

This planned strike on Friday is coming on the heels of the recent 21-day ultimatum issued by the NMA to the federal government to resume talks on the MSS for the doctors in the country.

NARD together with NMA has also called for the approval and re-institution of the MSS salary structure as updated for the basis of remuneration of all medical and dental practitioners in the country.
