Uganda: Phina Rocks Kasangati

Kampala — Phina Mugerwa might have missed out on a Pam Award nomination last year, but when she was invited to the Bell Lager party with the Pam stars last Friday, she showed just how much she could be a force to reckon with this year.

She reduced the Pam Award nominees and winners like Henry Tigan and Sweet Kid to novices before the Kasangati Afronica Bar crowd. Unlike other performances where she wards off randy men who storm the stage after getting transfixed by her erotic gyrations, she let the Kasangati men be. They had a field day.

One such man performed a simulated sex act; one look and you knew his mind was away with the fairies as he clasped her tight. Another male reveller who tried to imitate Phina's dance moves dislocated a shoulder; he was taken off for urgent medical attention. Earlier, the crowd had been treated to performances by Gen. Mega Dee and Red Banton who sampled their new albums, as well as the Viva Stars.

Sweet Kid received a fair reception as did Henry Tigan's hits. Music upstarts were given chance to gauge against the Pam winners, but the gulf in class was evident.
