Nigeria: First Lady Emerges Chairperson of AFLPM

Abuja — The 6th Conference of the African First Ladies' Peace Mission (AFLPM) ended in Brazzaville, Congo last Friday February 15 with the emergence of the Nigerian First Lady, Mrs Turai Umaru Musa Yar'Adua as Chairperson for the next two years.

Mrs Turai Yar'Adua succeeds the wife of the Congolese President, Mrs Antoinette Sassou N'Guesso who hosted the event.

At the end of the conference which held from February 14 - 25 2008, the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) or (MIPREDA in French) adopted the following communiqué:

- Endorsing entirely to the charter of African Union and its various statements;

- Condemning any attempts to destabilize the legal regime of Chad and violence that followed;

- Calling on all parties to recognize that dialogue should be used as the ultimate means for the preservation of peace and national cohesion

- Condemning at the same time violent events in Kenya, Chad, Sudan and the Comoros which resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced a number of women and children in particular

- Recalling that alternation of political power can only be the result of free, democratic and transparent elections.

- Expressing their moral support to their brothers of Kenya, Chad, Sudan and the Comoros

The mandate entrusted to the Congolese First Lady, Mrs. Sassou N'Guesso to head the African First Ladies Peace Mission, in 2005 in Ouagadougou for two- year tenure came to an end on the 15th of February 2008. After deliberations between the First Ladies, the Nigerian First Lady Mrs Turai Umaru Yar'adua emerged as the head of AFLPM (MIPREDA) for the next two years.
