The Minister of Energy and Mine, Mr. Tesfai Gebreselassie, stressed the paramount importance of electricity distribution in remote areas in efforts to promote equitable social service in both urban and rural areas.
He made the remarks in a speech he delivered at a workshop that was held from February 18 to 19 on the Rural Electrification Program.
Indicating that over 140 villages became the beneficiaries of electricity supply last year, the Minister pointed out that another 42 villages would soon get access to electricity and called on the people to back up the program.

Noting the vital significance of electricity supply in all domains of living activities, the Minister explained that efforts are underway to distribute electricity in rural areas, which have a scattered-style distribution, through introducing new mechanisms on the basis of their geographical location.
Study papers presented at the workshop indicated that different programs have been implemented to promote reliable electricity supply in the countryside. In this regard, villages around Dubarwa, Adi-Tekelezan, Hagaz, Elaberid, Alebu, Mendefera and Himbrti have already become beneficiaries. Likewise, other rural areas around Keren, Barentu, Dekemhare and Adi-Keih would get access to electricity this year.
Following discussion on topics like management, finance, energy and its substitutes, the participants of the workshop adopted a number of recommendations and resolutions.
