Accra — The President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that Ghana and for that matter Africa would not succumb to the dictates of and imposition from any powerful state.
Speaking at a joint press conference with President George Bush at the Osu Castle in Accra yesterday, President Kufuor said Ghana is collaborating with other countries because, "we want to relate on common values".
He said there was the need for nations to respect each other and dialogue on values, which he believed is what globalization should be about.
Reacting to a question on China, he said, "China is not coming as a colonial master I can assure you that our nations are not succumbing to dictates and imposition, not from China or elsewhere. If there is something Africa wants to buy and it is economical, no matter wherever it is, that is where Africa will buy it from."
President Kufuor noted that the world is now a global village, for which reason the developed countries are required to extend more support to the developing ones to help curb diseases, slow migration and solve other development issues.
He said, America cannot stand in isolation and pretend it is not concerned with what is happening in Africa. "We are in global village and if you do not help, then the migrant youth of Africa, driven by the technological forces will come to you."
President Kufuor extended his gratitude to President Bush for his immense contribution to Africa. He said African leaders have not relented on their quest to fight diseases on the continent, but their actions have been impeded by limited resources.
President George Bush expressed confidence in the capacity of the African leaders he has been dealing with so far, and hailed Ghana's President for making good use of US taxpayer money to develop Ghana.
"President Kufuor is the kind of leader people respect" he said. He said he was therefore confident in the Ghanaian leader's capacity and commitment to develop the wellbeing of his people and counted the Kufuor Administration among governments that are "not self-serving". Helping Africa, said the US President, has been the interest of America.
The two presidents enunciated the following common beliefs:
