In a bid to pursue his campaign to clean Douala, the Government Delegate to the Douala City Council, Dr. Fritz Ntone Ntone, December 15, ordered the demolition of 15 houses in Ndobo Quarters, Bonaberi.

The victims reportedly failed to respect warnings to quit the area or comply with the council's regulation. According to the council, the victims constructed the houses in violation of the law.

Some of the people affect allegedly built in areas considered as high-risk zones, while some houses were constructed in areas reserved for drainage lines. The Government Delegate disclosed on Friday, February 15, that his office currently has identified some 80 houses in same situation.

Bonaberi is one of the areas in Douala, which is known to suffer from heavy floods during the rainy seasons. This unfortunate situation is also known to seriously affect the population, as the floods cause the pollution of wells. One of the biggest problems, which the population of Bonaberi faces, is the lack of potable water.

This is because the quantity of water that the lone SNEC pipe transports across River Wouri to the subdivision of over 200,000 people, is not only inadequate, but does not reach many of the quarters.

Thus, most people in Bonaberi depend on wells for their drinking water. The Littoral Provincial Delegation of Public Health, which has marked Bonaberi as a cholera and typhoid prone area, attributes the situation to the poor quality of water there. Malaria too, is rampant.
