In a press release it issued in connection with International Mother Tongue Day on February 21, the Ministry of Education stated that major achievements have been registered in developing the mother tongue.

It stressed, however, that a lot still remains to be accomplished in order to attain the set target.

Pointing out that the significance of mother tongue in reinforcing national unity and conserving identity, as well as cultural heritage in Eritrea, dates back long before the declaration of International Mother Tongue Day, the release underscored that the EPLF had strived to promote equality of the mother tongue.

To this end, the Front had exerted utmost efforts to provide teaching in the mother tongue in the liberated areas. In addition, it managed to develop and standardize all the nation's languages with written alphabets. The release further called on nationals to work diligently in preserving and developing all languages in the country.
